Couple months ago, I bought Onkyo TX-NR809 to replace my old ‘entry-level receiver’ Yamaha RXV-440 that has accompanied me for the last 9 years! Though my old Yamaha is only an entry-level receiver, but it does perform a great job on decoding and delivering DTS / Dolby Digital 6.1 home cinema’s sound. However, I must admit that the power it produces is not big enough to drive my current floor-standing speakers (I used much smaller speakers before I upgraded to the big ones). Yamaha RXV-440 can only produce around 65 Watt per channel, it’s too small. In contrast, TX-NR809 can produce up to 135 Watt per channel ! And Onkyo TX-NR809 has HDMI inputs too, 8 inputs actually which is something that 9-years-old receiver will never have..

Back to my story. Because I need more power to drive my speakers, I started to find a replacement for my old Yamaha. Well, I started to search for a replacement since last year (yeah, last year). First of all, it’s because I want to get the best value for my money. And second of all, I have to save money, little by little, so I can afford to buy this wonderful yet a little bit out of my pocket receiver.
Last year, Onkyo TX-NR808 stood out of the crowd, stole the spotlight and received award for the Best home cinema amplifier (category £500-£1000). It also provides capability of improved home integration with Zone 2/3 preouts and a bi-directional remote control with on-screen RC set-up for attached components, and Macros for four activities.

High-Quality Video Processing with HQV® Vida™ VHD1900
The comprehensive HQV® Vida VHD1900 processor is created to optimize the quality of both standard-definition and high-def video sources. The chip utilizes multicadence tracking, expanded 12-bit color processing, and four-field motion-adaptive de-interlacing to enhance video quality and detail. Two new HQV technologies are at work here: Auto HQV® – which automatically enhances the incoming image, and HQV StreamClean™ cleans up compressed video in real time by eliminating mosquito and block noise from lower-quality sources such as online video sites.

Last but not least, the Remote and firmware update
The TX-NR809 is Onkyo’s first 2011 AV receiver to use a bidirectional, preprogrammed, and customizable RI remote control. When connected to the Internet, it maintains up-to-date RC control codes for connected devices. With the receiver’s Overlaid Graphical On-screen Display, users can speed through on-screen setups while still viewing their program. The remote also includes Macro presets for four activities. Additionally, the receiver has bi-directional Ethernet and RS232 ports for control, IR input and output, two 12-V triggers, firmware updates via Ethernet and USB, GUI Navigation via HDMI, powered Zone 2, and Zone 2/3 preouts.

By RobAtlanta -I’ve had the previous generation 808 for several months, but had the need for a second receiver and wanted one I was already familiar with. Quite simply, I’m amazed at the sound quality of the 809. All music and movies sound much, much better – and the 808 is no slouch. The sound is richer, fuller and more balanced for all audio files – hi def files on my server, but also streaming music at low bit rates. Surround sound decoding and balance for movies is much improved and really adds to the “you are there” experience. The 809 helped me greatly with one of my major problems – subwoofers that don’t have a lot of bark when Bruce Willis blows away the bad guys. Subs now sound much deeper and finally shake the floor and the only difference in my system is the 809. Onkyo has obviously put a lot of work into improving the audio processing technologies. GUIs are better – especially for the net function/button. I literally couldn’t pull myself away from the 809 for hours after I set it up – I had to see how much better everything sounded. Couldn’t be happier and consider the purchase worth every penny.
 

By Sam -I bought this unit to replace an 11 year old DS787 and it is even better than I expected. I was able to eliminate a lot of composite, audio and AV cables to really clean up the setup. Now my wife doesn’t have to figure out when to change the TV input to match a selected AV output. Plus setup is infinitely easier with HDMI. And the 6 speaker system sounds awesome in both movies and music with the quick setup using the included microphone. I can’t wait to hear how it sounds when I take the time to do the longer multiple position speaker adjustment.
 

By demusj -This receiver does everything it says!. If you can afford it, get it! The quality of the video going through the HDMI on receiver is vibrant. I never knew my TV could display colors like that. It’s almost as if I’m touching the colors. Networking of this receiver speaks for itself, plain and simple. For those of you looking for sound and deep tight base, Look no further, ONKYO just rescued you! I waited a long time to find the right receiver and i found it. I will be good for a long, long time. Money well spent.
 

By Raj -I just replaced my YAMAHA 867 (Was good but the sound never popped) with NR809 and it’s simply amazing to see the improvements in sound quality.

I am yet to play with some of the advanced features but Onkyo has thrown in a lot of goodies to make this AVR more useful for general public. Audissey MultiEQ provided great calibration and unlike the Yamaha YPAO, calibrated my sub-woofer and allowed me to stop after 4+ positions.

Dyanmic EQ and volume adjustments are also proving to be very useful and I can see the AVR changing the EQ based on the nature of the program.

Simply put, this drives my JAMO 5.1 speakers and 6510 sub-woofer very efficiently to deliver a great sound.

Now, I can only hope Onkyo has taken care of all the QC issues with the recent models…
